How To Improve Your Luck - Lesson 1

Studies have shown that the key ingredient in creating luck is your attitude about yourself. A characteristic found in almost all lucky people is something we therapists call "self-efficacy." This is simply a person's confidence in his or her capabilities.

There is no such thing as a "born loser." If you hit a patch of bad luck, you are not stuck with it for the rest of your life unless you decide that you are. You can head for any direction in life, but don't believe in old ideas about luck. It doesn't come from the outside. It comes from the inside.

People with strong self-efficacy see challenges as opportunities to do things differently while others see threats. They know what their goals are and are committed to them. They aren't easily discouraged and try even harder in the face of difficulties. And they recover more quickly after a setback.

If luck was random, then we should all get roughly equal shares of good luck and bad breaks. But when you look around, you see people who seem to be natural winners and others who create one catastrophe after another.

People who appear to have "all the luck" are actually those who move through life with a different attitude. They prepare for their breaks and recognize them when they come along. They develop habits that capitalize on good fortune. Often you are not aware of the whole story that went into creating luck and how they positioned themselves to be in the right place at the right time. Luck isn't as elusive as you might think. During the next few weeks we'll talk about how you can initiate events in your life and create possibilities through certain steps and adjustments that will bring you closer to luck than you ever thought possible. It will take commitment, awareness, focus and dedication to feel good and build positive momentum. Are you ready for that fantastic ride on the wave of good fortune?
